Denver native, micro brewer, puzzle enthusiast, and now, apparently, beat box champion? Christopher Hutchins, 27, found himself in the final rounds of a beatboxing competition without ever entering and you can thank the Georgia grass allergens for it.
While on a trip to visit his sister in Atlanta last summer, Hutchins found out that he had a severe allergies to the grass pollen in the east coast. "From the moment I landed at the airport, I could feel my throat start scratching," Hutchins recalls "...the whole week I was wheezing and coughing. Growing up in Colorado, we just had different plants I guess, so I never had to deal with it."
Hutchins recalls an especially difficult flare up he had towards the end of the trip:
"I was at a bar with my sister and she was having a rough night, so she left early. I had one last drink and then, went to the patio to get some air. A gust of wind came by and my throat just started itching like the dickens [sic]. I began wheezing so badly, I had to cover my mouth and face the ground so not to scare anyone. Trying to reassure everyone it wasn't COVID as I walked towards where my ride share said they would be."
He began to walk down an alley where his phone was taking him. As his chest was getting tighter and his cough were changing octaves. A crowd was in front of them and they started opening to let him through. Suddenly, he was face to face with another man who was coughing just as bad as he was.
"My chest hurt so bad. I couldn't stop wheezing and coughing. My body was completely out of control. This guy just looks at me and starts doing the same thing. At first I thought he was just coughing too, but the longer I looked at him the more it seemed like he was mocking me maybe? I'm not sure what happened. But the crowd was cheering me one with every new itch that came down my throat."
The crowd, as you could've guessed, ended up being a local beatboxing competition that Hutchins had stumbled upon. "That day changed my life," Hutchins said. But rather than tell you the rest, here you can read all about it in his new book How I 'beat' allergies: The Christopher Hutchins story is on shelves and audiobook this Friday.
