A new study has found that an astonishing 90% of people cannot spell the word "definitely" correctly on the first try. The study, which was conducted by a team of linguists at a top university, surveyed thousands of people from all walks of life and found that the vast majority struggle with this seemingly simple word.
"We were honestly shocked by the results," said lead researcher Dr. Sarah Johnson. "We expected some people to struggle, but we never thought it would be this bad. It's really quite alarming."
The study found that people tend to misspell "definitely" in a variety of ways, including "definately," "defiantly," and even "definitely" (but with an extra "a"). According to Dr. Johnson, this widespread misspelling can have serious consequences.
"If you're writing a professional email or document and you misspell a word like 'definitely,' it can make you look uneducated or careless," she said. "It's a small mistake, but it can have big implications."
The study has prompted many people to reflect on their own spelling abilities, with some admitting that they too struggle with "definitely" and other commonly misspelled words.
"I always thought I was a good speller, but this study has really shaken my confidence," said local resident Mark Smith. "I mean, I can spell 'supercalifragilisticexpialidocious' without even thinking, but 'definitely' trips me up every time."
Despite the alarming findings, Dr. Johnson remains hopeful that people can improve their spelling skills with practice.
"We're not saying that people should beat themselves up over this," she said. "We're just encouraging everyone to take a little extra time to proofread their writing and to pay attention to commonly misspelled words. With a little effort, we can all become better spellers."
In the meantime, the study has sparked a new trend on social media, with people sharing their own hilarious misspellings of "definitely" and other tricky words. It seems that even if we can't spell correctly on the first try, we can at least have a good laugh about it.
